Tuning In: Allowing the Journey to Unfold As It Was Written

One of the benefits of taking so many classes and programs over the years is that I have connected with so many amazing people that I’ve never even met in real life, but had collective connection over zoom and social posts.
I saw one of my ‘friends on the internet’ post something about the value and importance of listening to music albums from start to finish.
She was passionate about how it’s important to listen to them as they were meant to be heard.
A lot of people worked together to design a specific, meaningful listening experience.
And yet we spend most of our lives in playlists and shuffle mode.
Same, but Different
I recently bought a new-to-me physical CD and I’ve spent the last few days listening to it in my car while I drive.
(Such a moment of synchronicity that I saw my friend’s post. Hello universe, I see you. Definitely going in my Evidence Journal).
And even though it’s THE SAME songs that are on my phone (and I could totally simply play the album now that I’ve ripped it to my library), there is something different about knowing that I am “limited” to this listening journey. That I’m listening to it in the way, in the container that the listening experience was formatted, engineered, designed to be experienced.
The same thing can feel true in real life.
Life as a Playlist
When we live in “playlist mode”, only hearing the hits or a certain vibe, we miss out on the full range of the journey.
We forget about the natural ups and downs because we are present in the now.
I’m not saying we need to give up playlists and shuffle mode, but it's good to come back and ground ourselves in the story that’s being told on a greater scale. That maybe a song you don’t love as much hits you differently when listened in the context to the relationship to the other songs.
As we turn toward fall, and even the warm sunny days have an edge of crispness to them, let’s start to reflect on the story of this past season and of the one ahead.
What did this past season of our lives teach us?
Where do we want our journey to go over the next few months or years?
And then sink back into noticing and enjoying the moment of the that song is playing in the soundtrack of our lives.
Live in the now, but don’t lose sight of the big picture.
Ask yourself-
If my life were a soundtrack, what song would I use for this moment?
Based on the dreams in my heart, how will the story unfold? Is there a song or album that resonates?
What songs best tell the story of my life so far... and where it’s going?
If you were the sound engineer of your life, what would you do to shape your life experience?
This is such an ideal time of year for reflection and marveling at the change all around us. And for tuning into what we truly want to take with us into the next season of our lives.
So we can experience the magic of living a life that lights us up.
