Mindset Monday- Put the Phone Down

Do you feel like there is something that you are wandering about a bit aimlessly in your life, that you want to find yourself, know yourself better?

Well the good news is that you aren’t really lost, but you do need to do some work to uncover your true self.

And I hate to break it to you, the answers aren’t in your phone.

We are so quick to dive for a quick distraction rather than taking a moment to think. So put the phone down and grab a notebook and favorite pen instead and start making some lists and notes about what really makes you, you.

  • what are your skills and talents? (the more specific or “dorky” the better)

  • what things do your like or want more of in your life? What do you want less of?

  • what values do you live your life by?

  • what excuses do you use to hold yourself back from doing this inner work?

In doing this exercise, I came up with my own oddly specific talent that I have. I am an excellent four-leaf clover finder!

It’s a rather specific talent, but one I’ve honed since I was in elementary school. I have a thick book that I used to press them between the pages in an attempt to help save my collection. The four-leaf clovers are beyond fragile at this point, but it’s fun to know that I have a stash of good luck stored away.

And now that my kids are old enough, it’s fun to share this talent with them. Inviting them to slow down and spend some quality time together, noticing nature and celebrating our finds.

So now what?

How does this noticing this quirky talent help my personal growth?

  • Maybe it’s because it helps me recognize moments when I need to step aside for a quiet moment to fulfill a self-preservation need.

  • Or because shows me I am patient, an observer and a detail-noticer and that the universe rewards me for using these skills.

  • Or maybe because it reminds me to uncover the magic in everyday things, that we can celebrate when things don’t turn out as expected.

The next time you feel like grabbing your phone out of impulse or boredom, grab a notebook instead and start getting to know yourself better.
