Building Your Runway: The Foundation for Success

After celebrating hitting the 3-year milestone on my fitness streak last week, I was going to have a whole “thing” celebrating the 12 days of Streak-mas. I was imagined having a whole email sequence of inspiration to help you build a practice of showing up for yourself.

But at this point, it was not something that made my actionable priority list, once I factored in my actual life and mental capacity for doing all the things. (proof I don’t always get all the things done)

Also, I’m sure your inbox is flooded right now like mine is. So at this moment, I’m just really happy you’re here and taking a moment to grow your glow.

Build Your Runway

Several comments about my streak revolved about how smart it was to start something before the end of the year. Sort of like building your runway into the new year. And that was the point of it when I started my streak. Giving myself a foundation of evidence that I can show up for myself and use that to springboard into whatever came next.

And for even more evidence about how this method can give you a boost with your upcoming goals for 2023, I saw it was one of the tips was featured in The New Happy this week.

That sounds like a good idea you say, but what would I even streak on? I don’t want to start a fitness streak and I don’t have that kind of time to dedicate toward something like that. Good news is, it doesn’t have to take time. This is more about fulfilling the promise to yourself to show up a little each day and be a little bit better than before.

To get your juices flowing, I compiled my list of ways you could start getting your streak on today!

  • moment of mindfulness

  • glass of water each morning

  • 10 minutes of reading (inspiration here)

  • take a photo of something beautiful (I love making Chatbooks for our family pictures)

  • 10/10/10 squats, push-ups and jumping jacks or other combo of bodyweight exercises

  • daily self compliment or 'I am' affirmations (check out my mirror cling as a reminder)

  • tackle a 10-minute spot clean task

  • send a "thank you" card to people in your life (inspired by this book)

  • intentionally share your smile with people and see how many you can "collect"

It’s important to pick something that you connect with and that you will be excited to have completed or would fill your heart up. By showing up for yourself in this way, you are taking a step in knowing yourself better and growing your glow, one intentional moment at a time.

So now what?

Including today, there are 25 days left in the year. That's 25 moments where you made progress toward living a life that lights you up. With that kind of runway, you'll be unstoppable in 2023.

(and if you’re finding this later, guess what, you can still start building your own runway for a significant date in your own life. Gretchen Rubin has a whole list of great dates to start something)

To help see your runway building add up, I have a free printable to help you name the things that YOU decide are part of the progress. This is so much more than a habit tracker. It encourages you to see the many ways you are growing and following through on your journey and building a runway toward living a life that lights you up.

Even if you're not sure what your REAL streak would be, or you're worried about getting it right, using this time as practice is better than doing nothing. So just take a breath and start.

Your future self is already so proud of you.

And so am I.

Write it out

Journaling is a big part of how I figure things out, process my thoughts and give myself space to say the things. I talk about my stream of consciousness journaling as a guest on the Inspired Mindset podcast. (Apple, Spotify)

Sometimes having a prompt to work through gives a place to start and helps get the words flowing.

As you reflect on this journal prompt and think about what streak would give you a boost heading into the new year, ask a friend to join you and build your runways together.

Share this link with a friend and include a note with why you'd love to support each other on this journey. Having someone to share the experience with can make it that much more meaningful and can provide some accountability and moments of celebration together.

For more support with starting or deepening your journaling practice, download my free guide.

And if you need something to help remind you of why you need to take these small steps, feel the inspiration in this video from JJ Heller. She's a sentimental favorite of mine and couldn't help but share this fitting song

I'd love to know what you come up with so I can cheer you on. Leave a comment or send me a message on Instagram.

Sending you inspiration to live a life that lights you up!
